This is a terribly interesting story, I would also be interested in recipies of hers. I am a single stay at home Mom in Canada, with a short growing season. I do what I can with a garden that must be hidden in my flower beds. Get this, I live in a low income housing, the powers that be have encouraged renters to beautify our places with flower beds but do not let us plant gardens. They give the reason as the next people might not keep up the garden space. I have found that colored swiss chard, scarlett climbing green beans, purple flowering chive plants and various herbs hide the rest of my garden plants. I am thinking next year if I planted a few sweet peas with my climbing peas they will be able to go into my front “flower bed”. I have lined my sidewalk on one side with strawberry plants and good looking mulch. It is very pretty to look at with either healthy green plants, white blossoms or pretty red berries. I have just planted a small blueberry bush. I have wintered my strawberry plants with scredded newspaper and flyers the 1st year, but found although it protected well it was a pain to clean up the nest spring, The top layer would dry up and blew all over my yard all winter long. Last year I just placed my flyers folded on top and my strawberries did well. I did have to pick up some papers that blew off but a whole paper is much easier to pick up and replace. I found that I left my papers on a little too long this spring as there was a good cap of ice on them and the papers froze as I added layers each week. It didnt let the ground warm up quickly, and my yeild was down and my June bearing bloomed in July and August and the ever bearing in August only.

I’m so curious for more information from Mrs. Addy. :o) Especially nice would be some of her recipes - like the “Dump Its” - I personally would love to try that.

Am praying all is well for you & your family, as well as Mrs. Addy’s! :o)

I really enjoyed reading your posts. I love those Amish stores. My grandparents live in an Amish community and every time I visit I stock up on some wonderful items and take them home in my suitcase! They are not far from the Lehman’s store in Kidron and I love browsing. My children enjoy the traditional toys.

My husband and I met while living in urban California. We’ve since moved to a more rural area in a different state where his family owns a feed store. We grow a lot in the garden, share surplus with other family members, can and coupon shop! It makes things so much more bearable in this economy right now. I wonder if your friend might share some of her favorite recipes you could pass along to us?

Now I’m all intrigued!! I SO want to see a picture and read instructions on how she cans the pitas-with-fillings…HOW cool is THAT? I love that you’re curious about the same things I’d be, and I hope you keep writing about what you learn from this amazing woman…thank you so much for posting about it!
