Recipe For Homemade Baby Wipes

>26 November 2008 1,911 views

baby-wipesMaking your own baby wipes will save you big $$ through the years!

Here is the recipe that I use (NOTE: The brand doesn’t matter, so cheaper is better!):

  • 1 Tbsp. Baby Oil
  • 1 Tbsp. Baby Shampoo/Body wash
  • 1 Tbsp. Baby Lotion

Get 1 cup of water boiling in a small sauce pan. Once it reaches boiling, take it off the burner and add the above ingredients. Mix well until all is dissolved.

When the mixture is cooled off a little, either pour it over your wipes in a plastic container, or keep it in a spray bottle to spritz your wipes before using.

I store my finished wipes in an empty baby wipes container.

Now for the wipes themselves, you have a couple of options:

You can use Viva brand paper towels (they are super soft, and strong). Cut each paper towel into four squares. I make a stack of about 10 paper towels, then cut them into fourths. Keep doing this until you have a big enough stack.

Or for all of you who are going green (or to save even more money), cut squares from those extra baby receiving blankets or old T-shirts, and make reusable wipes. Just wash and use again!

This has been great info :) I am researching cloth diapers for my child, (I know, everyone is making a squinty-face) Looking for easy, convenient, and any deal I can find, I even see patterns (even gussets!) for free, but I don’t think I could sew soo many… I just wondered what your thoughts are on the subject? Have you googled PooPockets or am I the only one haha

I am currently cloth diapering our little one, and I LOVE them! I would recommend you check out my article on Saving Money On Diapers. I give a good list on where to find cloth diapers cheap. All of the diapers I have I found on Craigslist for really cheap. I paid $.75 – $2 each for my cloth diapers, which is a really good deal compared to buying new! Good luck in your efforts :) I always feel better putting cloth on baby!

Thanks for sharing your recipe! I’m totally confused on the subject of homemade wipes. From what I’ve seen, you can store homemade wipes (papertowels) in the solution; but can you store reusable (i.e. cut up receiving blankets or store-bought reusable wipes) in a wet container with the homemade solution? If so, for how long?

    Hi Tiff!

You can store either type of homemade wipes in the solution, but they do tend to mildew after a few days, so they don’t last long like that. I used to store them in a container of the solution, but now I find that it works better for me to keep the solution in a glass jar (though a spray bottle would work better), and wet the wipes when I’m ready to use them. Hope that helps!

What do you do with the cloth wipes after using them and before washing them? I am concerned with mildew if I throw them in with the bag with the cloth diapers? Also, what do you use to get the stains out of baby clothes and diapers?

  • Kendra at New Life On A Homestead (author) said:

    Katie,

I throw the wipes in the same diaper pail as the soiled cloth diapers. I’ve never had them mildew, though I do wash at least three times a week. To get stains out of baby clothes I use a shout gel stick… that thing works wonders! As for diaper stains, I don’t even worry about trying. They are diapers. They’re gonna be stained. The sun does a good job fading most stains when you line dry the clothes… but some faint staining still remains sometimes. Don’t sweat it :)

    Hi,

I just have to try all your wonderfull ideas :)
    And this was great!!
I have many years had paperroll that is strong paper, and no use.

But now it is for babywipes :)

But my one girl is so sensitive for chemicals that we can´t use even babyoil.
    So I did it from
jojoba oil and shea and home made olivesoap.

    The wipes are great!!
They are better than store bought.
    Thank you!
