My Dream Pantry

Isn’t it beautiful? This is my idea of a perfect pantry. All home canned, home grown food. Imagine how rewarding this would be to have, to eat from, to feed to your children. This is my goal. To eventually have no store bought cans of food in my pantry, but only a beautiful abundance of the fruits of my labors. Oh, how I long for the day!!

that would be great, wouldnt it? My kids are a little older than yours (my oldest is 16) so by the time I probably can accomplish this, it will only be my husband and me! Hmmm…maybe I can contribute to my kids’ families….lol.
This is the type of pantry my grandma had, minus the wire shelving. It was amazing! They used to live on an orchard and grew lots of fruits, as well. They had a whole wing of their basement that was a pantry for all their canned foods/juices, plus they had a cellar house (it stays cool without the use of electricity) where they stored fruits and vegetables that often lasted through the winter! O how I wish she had taught me how to can/preserve! Great picture! Is it online?
Wow , That is awesome , it is my dream too !! I really love that feeling of accomplishment.
Wow is all I can say!
Wow – now that’s inspiring!
Although my pantry is not quite as large, and I do still buy some canned fruits & veggies, I am grateful to have our pantry. I can about 600 quarts of produce per year. This is not something that I ever really wanted to do, but it came about out of necessity. My youngest daughter and I have severe food allergies and it’s darn near impossible to go to the store and “buy” food.
It sure is hard to eat store bought after having homemade!
Keren-
That’s so neat. I wish I’d had a chance to know my great-grandmother longer. She did this kind of stuff too. I found this picture online doing a google image search for “home canning pantry”.
Gee! I wonder how many people it took (and how many days!) to bottle this much! It makes me hungry!!
I want to live the homestead life in such a desperate way – that picture looks ideal! Unfortunately we are very settled in the suburbs so I am doing all that I can to live sustainably here.
This summer I am going to visit my Grandmother in northern Iowa German country. She’s going to teach me the homemaking skills that she knows from WW II and her childhood and child rearing years. She still keeps a root cellar stocked and preserves her produce that she grows and meat that she purchases on sale. She does it all on their little tiny patch of land and I hope to learn the same skills.
Thank you for this wonderful blog – I love reading about your adventures and learning alongside of you!
