Love this picture, I have something similar only on a much smaller level. The only thing I don't like about it is they have jars stacked ontop of each other and my husbands grandma, who is my go to girl on any canning I do, told me you can't do that because it will break your seals, so I am very, very careful not to stack anything on my jars, it does take up more room but I would rather be safe than sorry. Since it takes so much time and effort to can all that greatness!!! lol

I want to live the homestead life in such a desperate way - that picture looks ideal! Unfortunately we are very settled in the suburbs so I am doing all that I can to live sustainably here.

This summer I am going to visit my Grandmother in northern Iowa German country. She's going to teach me the homemaking skills that she knows from WW II and her childhood and child rearing years. She still keeps a root cellar stocked and preserves her produce that she grows and meat that she purchases on sale. She does it all on their little tiny patch of land and I hope to learn the same skills.

Thank you for this wonderful blog - I love reading about your adventures and learning alongside of you!

That's so neat. I wish I'd had a chance to know my great-grandmother longer. She did this kind of stuff too. I found this picture online doing a google image search for "home canning pantry".

Although my pantry is not quite as large, and I do still buy some canned fruits & veggies, I am grateful to have our pantry. I can about 600 quarts of produce per year. This is not something that I ever really wanted to do, but it came about out of necessity. My youngest daughter and I have severe food allergies and it's darn near impossible to go to the store and "buy" food.

It sure is hard to eat store bought after having homemade!
