My Strawberry Banana Smoothie

smoothie-001-mediumI don’t know about you, but I LOVE smoothies! I’ve tried dozens of recipes for making my own smoothies at home, but they never quite turned out as good as a Smoothie Shop’s. I’ve tried smoothie recipes using sherbet, milk, powdered milk, ice cubes, and soy milk. None of them ever tasted right. Usually the kids enjoyed them, but I was never really impressed.

Well, one day I was searching our empty fridge for something to make a snack for the kids. I noticed the huge container of plain yogurt that nobody was eating. We usually get vanilla, but had accidentally brought home the wrong kind, and it was just too bitter for any of us to swallow. I hated for it to go to waste, so I thought, Maybe I’ll just blend up the yogurt with some frozen strawberries and make strawberry yogurt for the kids.

I dumped the yogurt and strawberries into the blender and let it mix. I was surprised when it didn’t come out thick like yogurt, but runny… like a smoothie! (Okay, okay, don’t laugh at me. This may be elementary to some of you experienced cooks, but I still have a lot of experimenting to do!)

I tasted it and found that it still needed something else. I added a banana, and orange juice; then tried it again. Still a little too bitter. I added some sugar and blended one more time; Perfect!

Ever since I stumbled upon this creation I’ve been making it like crazy! Each time I try a little something different, but it always comes out very yummy. So, anyways, here is my own smoothie recipe:

Strawberry Banana Smoothie

  • 1 cup plain or vanilla non-fat yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp sugar, or some honey (only if you use plain yogurt)
  • 3/4 c. orange juice
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 ripe banana

Just dump it all into the blender, and mix well! If it’s too thick you can add more O.J. If it’s too bitter, use a little sweetener. You can add some wheat germ to it too, if you like.

And the kids are sure to love it!

If any of you have a favorite smoothie recipe to share, I’m all about trying new stuff!! I’d love to hear from you!

We’ve been making smoothies for a few weeks now. I buy the big bags of frozen fruits from Walmart. It has cantalope, honey dew melon, grapes & pineapple. I use the yogurt and whatever flavor of juice I happen to have on hand. The girls love them! ;)

I haven’t experimented too much but when I have I’ve done low fat vanilla ice cream, straw berries, banana’s and ice. Blend well. Oh so good.

My family has been making smoothies since I can remember. Our favorite right now is peanut butter banana! Or if we’re making them just for a snack, I’ll throw in some chocolate too. Tastes like a milkshake! I ALWAYS keep frozen bananas on hand. If you ever come across any that are very ripe and discounted, buy them and throw them in the freezer. (I normally buy at least 2 bunches and freeze half of them when they’re plenty ripe.) I find they help with the texture and smoothness. I’ve never found the need to use other sweeteners (besides what is naturally occurring in the fruit), but every now and then I’ll throuw in some flavored yogurt or a little fruit juice if I’m low on milk.

    Peanut-Butter Banana Smoothies:

    1 frozen banana per person
1 T peanut butter per person or however much you like
about 2 c milk, more or less depending on how thick or runny you like

Our other staple smoothie Blueberry Banana:

One frozen banana per person (even if they’re a little person)
    1 c frozen blueberries
    at least 1 c milk

I’ve recently been making popsicles out of any leftovers too. Yummy and healthy! (I’ll sometimes add honey or maple syrup to sweeten if using as a popsicle, just seems to be more popsicle-ey)

My current favorite is peanut butter and banana. I don’t remember where I found this recipe, but I’ve adapted it a bit, anyway. Just blend together one frozen banana, 1/8 cup creamy peanut butter, 1/2 cup milk, and 2 tablespoons honey. I like using frozen bananas in smoothies because they make them frothy. It also chills it, if your blender, like mine, wimps out when it comes to crushing ice cubes. Sometimes I up the peanut butter in this recipe, but it’s still good!

We throw a bunch of stuff in ours! Just today we made one w/strawberries, blueberries, grapes, banana, apple, broccoli, spinach, carrots, oranges, and mango. We found that the kids don’t even notice the veggies =) I usually can get a mango that lasts for 2 smoothies, the grapes for 4, the spinach for 4 and broccoli for 2. It doesn’t get too expensive that way…we don’t add yogurt or anything, just maybe some water and ice. I am hoping to try the PB banana one soon though! That sounds so good….

I love smoothies! Unfortunately, no strawberries or honey for me. Food allergies.

The downside of smoothies for me is the cost. Do you make your own yogurt? It’s so easy and it really cuts down the cost.

Sounds like the smoothies I make, only I omit the sugar or honey & use pineapple juice instead of orange juice. I love it!

Yummy! I came accross your website looking for pictures to go with the strawberry banana almond milk smoothie I made this morning and recognized that you have the same blender as me so i thought i would stop by your blog and say hi :) I “flash freeze” my fruits so I can have them on hand when I need them and add water to my smoothies so my blender will not break trying to chop up those frozen berries and stuff.

Green Smoothies are the only ones the kids and I drink. They give you loads of energy and are great for kids who do not get 6+ servings of veggies 7 days a week. They are super sweet with the bananas, but sometimes we add some Raw Stevia too. I’ll make ya one! You will be hooked, I promise! :o ) Robyn, from Greensmoothie girl.com has loads of yummy recipes.
