Natural Healing For Ear Infections
MelissaD, over at Growth as a Wife and Mom, recently shared on her blog how she naturally treats her family’s ear infections. Although I have not had an opportunity to try this remedy yet, I am excited about having the recipe for future use.
When I first had my daughter I was working in our church Daycare nursery. You know how daycares are, the kids are always sick! My poor Jada had constant, chronic ear infections for months as a baby. Finally, the doc’s referred me to a specialist who recommended putting tubes in her ears.
I was very uncomfortable with the thought of this, and really did not like the idea of her being put under anesthesia. I told the doctor that I would be quitting work and staying home within a couple of months, and I wanted to wait and see how she did once out of the daycare before we allowed the tubes.
I am so glad that we waiting! She has never had another ear infection since then. I do hate giving antibiotics for everything; if there is a way to relieve or heal the infection naturally then I am all about trying it. So I was very excited to find this formula.
Here is the recipe in a nutshell:
Crush 5 garlic cloves in a bowl. Add about 3 Tbsp olive oil. Stir well and let sit for an hour or more. Using a paper towel, strain the oil out. Using a Q-tip, rub the strained oil all around the outer area of the infected ear. Apply 3-4 times/day for 2-3 days.

We use garlic oil too! Only I don’t make my own, we just buy garlic oil gel capsules, poke a hole in it with a pin and squeeze it IN the ear. I like the convenience of the capsules being ready to go, and if you have a trip they travel well too. If you don’t have garlic you can also use an onion! Just grate an onion, strain the juice, and put a few drops of the juice in the ear. We always used the onion growing up, but I do the garlic oil on my kids because it’s ready to go. I usually put it in their ears, and then put a little cotton to stop it running out, and tuck them in bed for the night.
I also recently came across this article:

They recommend using garlic oil on your feet(!) for cough/chest colds. (Wear socks!) I used this on my children and husband this past week and it worked very well!
