Budget? What Budget??

>26 August 2009 859 views

I have a confession to make. I’ve totally dropped the ball. We were on a $35/wk grocery budget. Tonight, however, our grocery bill came up to over $130! Big oops.

We did buy a few non-food items… probably $40 worth. But still, that’s big time over budget.

It’s because this time we bought a lot of convenience foods. Cereal, bagels, prepackaged salad mix, frozen foods…

I just don’t have the energy at 6:30am to whip up a nice batch of eggs, bacon and jelly biscuits anymore. I need convenience foods right now. It’s for my own sanity! Not to mention the health of my children. A cup of milk and a Nutrigrain bar is a poor excuse for a breakfast. I’m ashamed.

I’ll really try to do better next trip! This should last us a while though.

youre doing fine, you sound like youve got more energy most days than I do now, and my kids are 22 and 19! although recently I started shopping at aldis every week for a month, and I can tell a big difference in what I spend now, as compared to what I was spending. also, I didnt get angelfood for a month and that made a difference too.

Yeah, I haven’t been shopping at Aldi’s, and can see the difference! It takes me about 25 min. to get there, and I just haven’t wanted to drag the kids all the way out there. I usually try to get 2 wks worth when I do go. It’s been Walmart for us lately.

Walmart grocery shopping is bad. At least for me. I end up with so many things I wouldn’t have gotten. At least at Aldi (since we have to schedule it in) we usually get less junk. Though I admit, we currently have a steady supply of bright colored fruit flavored snacks for on the go.

Sometime this fall when it cools down I am going to try making a whole bunch of breakfast sandwiches to toss in the freezer. It will let hubby have take and go breakfast and the rest of us have something fast that isn’t prepackaged. I sort of can’t wait, but we need to eat some room into the freezer first.

I would have to be really focused to only spend $35 a week on food. That would be tough! We don’t even buy convience things (rarely!)

I’ve been making so much of our own foods….I don’t remember the last time I bought bread, it’s been FOREVER!
The last couple months we’ve been doing really good on groceries, because we’ve been eating out of our neighbor’s garden nearly every night! She just keeps bringing us more food, so we have fresh veggies nearly every night! It’s been awesome!

But, we have a big trip coming up…we are running low on a lot of staples…I don’t look forward to trips like these! The bill just keeps adding up, no fun!

Give yourself a break though, you have a lot going on right now…a few convenience foods won’t hurt you for a while! You need the break!

    Becca-

Freezer Breakfast Sandwiches sounds great! Could you share the recipe?? My husband would probably really enjoy something like that too. He usually doesn’t have time to eat breakfast before he goes to work, and is bad about grabbing a .99 biscuit from fast food.

There’s a time for everything. Having just had a baby is a good time to cut yourself a little slack. :) I did print this recipe off yesterday, because I think it’s something my kids and husband would enjoy for breakfast, and she said that it freezes well.

A couple of weeks ago I cooked two packages of Grands biscuits (that I had a coupon for) along with some bacon and sausage and packaged up sausage/bacon biscuits and froze them. I actually wrapped the meat separately from the biscuit, but did slice the biscuit. I thought they would microwave better separately. Anyway, this was a huge hit with my husband and kids, and they are all gone already. :) It’s definitely something I’ll repeat.

I was thinking the same thing, If you have a recipe for breakfast sandwiches, I would love to see it on here as well.

I am so right there with you! Fancy breakfast not happening. Made some rice pudding–easy and can be eaten cold.

Hi Kendra. First off I just wanted to say – fantastic site!
I make these breakfast sandwiches on the weekends and then the kids can have one before school (my 6 & 8 year olds LOVE them) or my husband grabs one to toss in his lunch to have @ coffee break.

    English Muffins (8)
    Cheese Slices (we like American)(8)
    Eggs (8)
Meat-cooked (I usually use sausage patties – the great value brand from Walmart is great, but you can use bacon, and canadian bacon too!) (8)

    Split muffins. Set aside.
Beat eggs 4 @ a time and pour into hot pan. Cook til just about set. Once they set; cut into quarters and flip each quarter and cook til done.
    Assemble.
What I do is take 1/2 the english muffin and top it w/the cooked egg, then sausage patty, slice of cheese and top with muffin.
Wrap each sandwich in a piece of papertowel and then stick in a baggie. Pop in freezer or fridge.
    Repeat this procedure w/remaining ingredients.

Obviously you can make as many as you like….To reheat – simply remove sandwich from baggie (I use the cheapie fold over ones) and pop in microwave (keep the paper towel on it!) for about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.

Don’t feel bad, I have been off budget lately too. The great thing is you can always get back on the budget train! And I didn’t just give birth!

I have a 7 week old baby boy, and I can completely understand where you’re at right now. I barely have time to go to the bathroom for 5 min, let alone bake bread from scratch or make homemade yogurt, so I’ve been buying a LOT of convienience foods too. I’m trying to enjoy his newborn phase, but it’s hard not to look forward to when he doesn’t need to be held 24/7. It’s been getting better every day.
