When the first curly like tail on the vine closest to the watermelon turns brown it's ready to pick. That's one mistake we didn't make only because my FIL has been growing watermelon for years and he lives next door to us.

Another hint is the food is ready to be picked when it easily comes off the vine. When I read that you had to 'pry it off the vine' I was worried...

Gardening is a learning experience, even for experienced gardeners. Throw it on the mulch heap and maybe one will grow there next year!

The only year I planted watermelon, we had a bad garden year. Too much water, then way too hot, etc. The melons didn't even start growing until late August. I waited, and watched, and pampered and wondered when the right time to pick would be.

When I finally broke down and picked one, it was barely pink inside, but it was pretty sweet! I haven't tried them again, since they took up an entire raised bed and I don;t know what I'm doing!!

Oh, I am so sorry for you all! Perhaps by sharing your misfortune you will save another family (like mine!) from the same disappointment. Your zucchini and cucumber look great.
