Aldi Score!

>23 January 2010

stuff 088 (Medium)

Tonight I totally scored at Aldi. It was almost closing time, just the time I like to go cause there aren’t any lines or crowds. I was checking out the bananas, and was disappointed to find that all of them were bruised or yucky. But it quickly occurred to me that my pig would love to have these bananas!

I found a manager and asked her what they were going to do with the damaged produce. She told me that they just throw it out. I explained that I have a pig, and could use the bad food. She told me that if I filled a box full of bananas, she’d let me have it for $1.25. I grabbed every bag of bananas they had left!! I also threw in some loose oranges and potatoes they were gonna toss.

And it’s cool cause most of the bananas are still good, only one or two in each bag is damaged. So we got an awesome deal!! I’ll probably freeze most of the good ones for banana bread and smoothies. The rest the pig can enjoy!

There are like 13 bags of bananas here! What a blessing!!

I’ve been cubing bananas and freezing them for a smoothie every morning! They are so good frozen!

A guy we know who has a decent-sized, but not huge, orchard on his land always calls us and lets us come out and pick up all of the apples that have fallen onto the ground. They’re not in good shape for people to use, but we get a lot of free food for the pigs, and the guy gets his yard cleaned up for free.

Yeah fruit trees are the way to go for animals! Man.. I’d be too tempted to dry the bananas, freeze some, eat them, make banana bread, etc. Lucky pigs.

    Kim,

Oh yes, we are definitely keeping a lot for ourselves!! I just bagged two gallon freezer bags stuffed full of bananas for smoothies and breads. And I have over two dozen good ones in my fruit bowl on the counter! All of the good bananas and pieces that weren’t bad I kept for us!!
