Fess Up Friday: Quick, Hide The Dirty Dishes!

>18 February 2010

fess up friday final button

Since this is the very first edition of Fess Up Friday here at New Life On A Homestead, I’ll start it all off by sharing with you my deepest, darkest, housekeeping secret. You ready for this?

Sometimes, I hide the dirty dishes.

That’s right, I said it. Hide them.

I’ll be going merrily about my day when all of a sudden my worst fears become a stark reality… visitors are pulling into my driveway… unannounced!!

Quickly realizing that every single dish I own is filthy and spilling over the sink, cluttering nearly every inch of my countertops, I frantically begin cramming as many dirty plates and greasy pans into my oven as can possibly fit. Whatever is leftover is thrown into the nearest empty box and run into my bedroom to hide in the closet.

On my way to answer the knocks at the door, I run my hand over the counters to sweep off any stray crumbs… then I brush my hair back out of my face, straighten my clothes, and answer the door with a nonchalant smile and welcome my visitors in.

So… if you’re ever in my area and feel like just dropping by without a proper warning… do me a favor and don’t look inside my oven!

That’s so bad, I know!  Now it’s your turn, I want dirt people!

If you have a blog, and aren’t too embarrassed to spill the beans to millions of viewers, write up a short post confessing that less than perfect housekeeping secret you’ve been sweeping under the rug! Copy the Fess Up Friday logo and paste it into your post, then leave your link below to share with others!

This can be about cleaning “shortcuts”, mommy mistakes, recipe flops, forgetful minds… anything to get a laugh! I do reserve the right to delete any links to crude or inappropriate materials. Please leave a link directly to your Fess Up Friday post, and not your home page.

If you don’t blog, or would rather share your secrets anonymously (com’mon, they can’t be that bad!), you can leave your silly story in the comments section.

I’m not looking for a long post. Just a short admission reminding us all that we are all doing the best we can, and sometimes that just has to be good enough!! It won’t take long, and you’ll feel so much better getting it off your chest, *smiles*. So, you have no excuses!

LOL! Thanks for sharing this. You just gave me an idea for next time, too … not that I have any lack of less-than-perfect housekeeping secrets!

I’m looking to see what everyone else links up. Have a great weekend!

I run (literally) through the living room with an empty laundry basket, fill it with anything and everything lying around, throw the laundry basket in our bedroom, and LOCK the bedroom door!

I confess I’ve done the ‘hide the dirties in the oven’ trick, but once it backfired on me. I forgot I had a few pans and plastic utensils in the oven and noticed a stink about the house as I was preheating it to bake a pizza. Unfortunately, I lost a few utensils that time.

When we were in college, my husband’s roommate used to do this… except, he wouldn’t take the dishes out of the oven once visitors left. My husband would find out about them when he preheated the oven. Yuck!

OK… I did it. Not proud of it, but it is what it is. Maybe someday I’ll be a “perfect” housekeeper :) …. not.

You don’t know how happy it makes me to read that, Kendra! :) That just made my day! And gave me an idea for next time! I do usually put as many things as possible into my bedroom and close the door. Sigh….. Now I know where to put the dirty dishes!!!!

My confession: I only bathe my kids every few nights. Unless it;s the summer and the weekend and we are playing outside (in that case, nightly bathes are a must), then I just bathe them about every 3 nights or so. I figure, they get their “parts” wiped when I change them, I am always wiping their faces and hands after they eat…. So, they are getting spot cleaned several times a day. But when it is bath night, I throw them both in the tub, clean them up and then I let them play with bubbles and bath toys.

    Keep it going ladies! LOL.

About the laziest shortcut I have is to sweep and mop at the same time. It works pretty well, actually. At least the major chunks are off the floor. Use a little Pine-sol and you can fake out visitors aromatherapeutically. Is that a word? We also do the basket of stuff, and it gets stowed in the laundry closet. Normally it’s a Lost and Found of sorts. We don’t have a lot of drop-in’s – otherwise I’d be OCDing my family to death!
