**Giveaway Closed. Congratulations to Linda! And a big thanks to everyone who participated!**

As our economy has struggled to pull itself out of this recession, more and more people are becoming aware of the need to start preparing for even harder times ahead. One preparedness measure that has become increasingly popular is storing “survival seeds“. Simply put, these are all of the heirloom variety seeds that you would need to be able to plant a large enough garden to feed you and your family. Heirloom seeds, unlike store bought packs, are a definite must as these are the only kind that you can save seeds from. These seeds have the potential of feeding your family for generations to come! And they will store for up to 5 years, so you don’t have to use them right away.

When Hometown Seeds recently contacted me and so generously offered to host a “Survival Seed Pack” Giveaway here, I knew this was one product I could put my support behind. I’m always somewhat hesitant placing seed orders with a new company over the internet. After all, you can’t always trust that your money is actually going to a legitimate purchase. Well, I’m here to tell you that Hometown Seeds is a real company that you can trust. I received my package from them in just a couple of days, and everything was just as they said it would be.

Interested in winning your own Survival Seeds? Each pack includes 16 of the most popular varieties of open-pollinated seeds, including:

  1. Lincoln Peas
  2. Detroit Dark Red Beets
  3. Kentucky Wonder Brown Pole Beans
  4. Yolo Wonder Peppers
  5. Champion Radish
  6. Lucullus Swiss Chard
  7. Black Beauty Zucchini
  8. Waltham Butternut Winter
  9. Bloomsdale Longstanding Spinach
  10. Scarlet Nantes Carrots
  11. Long Green Improved Cucumber
  12. Rutgers Tomatoes
  13. Golden Acre Cabbage
  14. Romaine Paris Island Cos Lettuce
  15. Golden Bantem Sweet Corn
  16. Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion

Here’s a little more information about what you can expect from each Survival Seeds kit:

  • OVER 22,000 SEEDS! We encourage you to compare us with the competition.
  • You will not find a better value for premium quality seed.
  • Wholesale Pricing.  Purchased by the packet, this pack would cost over $123.00

I have always loved to garden since I was a little girl! I was raised by my grandparents, and my Papa always had a beautiful garden that just BURST forth with bounty! I remember carrying paper bags to the neighbors, full of veggies, and the neighbors were always happy to get the love offering =) Since I became a wife and mom and have been gardening on my own, I have been very interested in the importance of saving seeds and using and keeping heirloom seeds. The history of Victory Gardens has always intrigued me, knowing that having a garden was a normal part of most house wives lives back then, and how it is NOT now. Have to wonder just how much we have lost with all the progress ;-) But it makes my heart merry to be outside watering, like I was last night, and have one of my children reach down and pluck a leaf of red leaf lettuce and stuff it in his mouth, cause he can, and because he loves fresh veggies straight from the garden.

    Blessings,

    Niki

I would love love love to win these! I planted heirloom seeds in my garden this year and am going to experiment with seed saving this fall, but I was just recently thinking it would be a good idea to have some good seed packets in storage as well! If things ever got really bad, a food storage of cans, etc, would only last so long, so eventually, you would have to start growing your own food. This is an awesome giveaway!!

Although I’m not of the “survival” mentality, I do believe that passing on heritage seeds (chickens, goats, etc.) is imperative. We have started a small veggie garden this year, but I have already vowed to use only heirloom seeds from now on. I want to be part of keeping our heritage going and sharing that with others. Thanks for considering me for this amazing opportunity!

The hubby and I have spent the last few years getting a garden set up and actually functioning. Our soil is horrible, so this has been a work in progress. If the worst happens, we have already made plans for taking over more of the yard.

We also have room under our trees in the front and side of the house. Last year I grew summer squash there – it looked like big elephant leaf plants – the neighbors had no idea there was food growing in the landscaping. I did not do it again this year (it was to have been bush beans and swiss chard), but could easily do it again.

I am on a very tiny plot of land in a subdivision with an HOA. The HOA is reasonable (at least so far) and everything is behind a privacy fence in any event except the front and side landscaping. Our yard is patrolled by our three dogs – if we had to, we would leave one of them out all night to protect what we planted.

It’s not ideal, but I got a lot of produce out of the garden last year and this year looks to be good also.

As a 60 year old female, I have a lot of the skills to put up the harvest and would love to have the seed kit. With most of my children also unemployed, I could really use this to help feed my grandchildren and put up the harvest. I love to can, freeze, dry, and pickel foods. I will be learning to make Kim Chee this year and cabbage. My biggest problem is my lack of money to add to my food storage. I know the need is there and have used mine several times but right now I am unemployed for the last year. I would love to be able to grow a garden again. A real garden. I am moving into a different place and will have a huge garden area there. I have a small container garden on the deck right now. Even my small garden has been a life safer and I do save seeds and give seeds to others at the senior center. I subscribed to your blog already and put you on facebook and added you to my blog site as well. I love your blog. Adding the button right now.

Saving seeds is a wonderful way to prepare your home and family for a possible economic crisis. It’s something that most of our grandparents did out of habit. Unfortunately this “skill” has been lost over the years and we need to make an effort to cultivate this lost art. It could save our lives!

    What a great give-away!

I am just learning about gardening and want to learn how to save seeds == the right way. I would love to be entered. Being able to grow one’s own food is not just a hobby, but necessary – come what may.

This looks like a terrific package! A great variety of seeds. I definitely believe in saving our own seeds and just saved some of my Cascadia peas for next year. Thanks for an awesome giveaway.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!! I can’t believe it : ) Thank you so very much. I was actually checking out some of the other bloggers that have links on the list. What great blogs that I plan to keep visiting. This drawing has been a win win for me.

I checked back here after reading about putting up corn on your blog and there it was, the winner! I screamed and my dh looked and wonder what in the world. All I could say is I won, I won. I almost couldn’t get it out.

Thank you and Hometown Seeds . I am so going to blog about your site along with the Hometown Seeds this weekend.

I want you to know that I plan to save and share seeds from my gardens. So I’d like to pass on my happiness and the love of growing my own food from saved seeds. Hard times are here and having a wonderful bounty of seeds that can save many from hunger is the best investment that I know of. Keep the gold I’ll take the survival seeds any ol day ;) .

I will pay this forward, thank you

    tc linda
