An Easy Way To Split Wood
>18 August 2010
My friend Richard emailed me with the link to this video, and the thought that my readers would enjoy watching as well. Thanks, Richard! This is actually a pretty ingenious idea! We have a log splitter, but if for some reason we are unable to use it, this would definitely be our second method of choice! (Although my husband laughed about the possibility of hitting the rubber tire and the axe bouncing back at him.)

I watched this a couple days ago. Where did I see it? I can’t remember. Survivalblog maybe? Anyways, I thought it definitely looked cool but man our rounds are so much bigger and harder than that. I’d love to have seen him tackle some really HARD hardwoods and bigger rounds so I could show hubby without him telling me it would only work on wimpy rounds LOL!
Yeah, what she said. Somehow I doubt that’s an old tractor or combine tire.
Have to say, I agree with your hubby Kendra, on the risk of hitting the tire, especially if you have teens helping you split…could end up with a trip to the emergency room. Although the simple solution to that is to move the tire further down on the wood.
Thanks for sharing
My question is this, why is he chopping up such smallish wood? I mean he’s practically making splinters out of what he is cutting up. I’m 33 and have had wood heat my entire life except for the last 5 yrs and we have lived a few different places and any of our stoves would have taken those pieces of wood except for that one larger piece that he cut up in the tire by its self, even then we would have only split it in half and if it were a huge piece we would have split it into 4ths. He looks like he is working hisself to death to cut up that wood into practicaly kindling.
Dana, maybe it’s for a wood cook stove? I dunno.
Well, give him credit for being creative! Maybe a bit lazy, too, but creative none the less!
I have to say in all the time that I’ve helped my grandfather around the farm and now my hubby around his parents property I’ve never seen anything bounce back off a tire that wasn’t on a rim full of air. I mean has anyone watched the Biggest Loser when they are slamming sledge hammers off monster truck tires? It never bounced back! I think the idea is ingenious and I will definitely be telling my husband about this!
