Seventh Generation Giveaway

>13 August 2010

Seventh_Generation-4_WEB

**THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO SHEILA!**

It’s close to that time of year again… cold and flu season. And with kids going back to school, germs are gonna be in full swing! There are several things you can do to minimize your risk of getting sick though, so make sure to instill these good habits in  your children as well:

Take probiotics. “A recent study showed that children who received enough probiotics daily throughout the cold and flu season had a significant reduction in the number of illnesses they had and, when they did get sick, the symptoms were both milder and didn’t last as long.”

Get lots of Vitamin D. If you aren’t able to get out in the sun, make sure to eat lots of foods high in Vitamin D (like fish, milk, and eggs), or take supplements.

Take Care of Your Body. Eat healthy, sleep well, and get lots of exercise.

Wash Your Hands. Especially teach your children to do so after touching “high risk” things, using the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, and before eating.

Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose and Mouth. This will minimize the spreading of germs, a good habit to teach your children. Though seemingly impossible, I know!

Cover Sneezes & Coughs The Right Way. Don’t use your hand to catch the spray, always cough or sneeze into the bend of your arm.

To help get you on your way to a healthier season, Seventh Generation is giving away a Back To School Gift Pack to one of my lucky readers, which includes: a Seventh Generation backpack, two canisters of Seventh Generation disinfecting wipes (one for home and one that you might like to donate to your child’s classroom or Sunday School), disinfecting multi-surface spray cleaner, facial tissue and paper towels.

Okay, ready to enter? For your chance at winning this Seventh Generation Giveaway, you can do any or all of the following methods to receive one entry, with a total of SIX entries! But you must leave a separate comment for each entry to have each one count.
Good luck!

1.) Simply leave a comment telling me what you do to stay well during cold and flu season.

2.) Add my Button to your sidebar, then leave a comment here letting me know you did, with a link to your blog. If you already have my button, let me know!

3.) Post something about this giveaway on your blog. Then come back here and leave a separate comment telling me you blogged about it, with a link to your post.

Last winter I was pregnant for baby #8.I was careful to avoid crowds. We tried to stay out of grocery stores and sent my husband instead. When we HAD to go I carried the toddler in my Ergo and told the others not to touch anything. We also drank alot of Emergen C.We still went to church but were careful about cleaning the toys in the nursery and not being close to anyone who was sniffling. We stayed healthy and I am praying for another good healthy winter. We homeschool so the germs are somewhat limited there as well.~Nikki

I try to make sure that my children get lots of sleep. I think the start to most illnesses is when we get over tired and that lets down our immune system.

  • Carrie M said:

We load up on vitamin C – always have clementines or naval oranges in the house for snacking. And we don’t forget to stay active. Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean you have to stay couped up inside. We try to take walks, play with the animals, whatever we can to be outside.

We live in the Great Frozen North and stay healthy by changing gears and getting plenty of fresh air and sunshine snowshoeing, skiing, iceskating and other fun winter sports. I also keep enough extra pillowcases so that I can change them every other day instead of once a week during cold/flu season.

Subscribe to and <3 your blog, too!

I use doTERRA oils to help speed up the healing. I really like them because I can also safely give them to my 2 month old son. It’s so hard when you can’t DO something for your little ones. They also sell some pills, including probiotics. The beads are small enough that you could give them to an infant.

I am currently fighting a cold and used the oil blend Breathe to unstuff my nose, some OnGuard in my water to ease my sore throat. When my order comes in, I’ll have more lemon oil too. Think of it like a lemon honey “tea”, except 1 drop of lemon oil equals about 1 teaspoon of the juices. It’s STRONG stuff!

Ooo…I love seven generation! We try to stay healthy all year long, it really makes the flu season easier. We go out in public less during the flu season and especially avoid areas with high concentrations of young children, such as Bouncy Houses, Indoor Playgrounds and instead enjoy outdoor activities like the playground where we can breathe fresh air. And this may sound odd but we DO NOT get the flu shot, I have not had a flu shot in over 5 years and my kids have never had one. I use to get them every year while in the military and would get the flu every year. Since stopping the shots I have not gotten the flu since.

Well, it isn’t very inventive and not always very fun, but if there seems to be a lot of flu or cold germs circulating, ya know, like all season, we become very picky about which playdates we go to, which outings we attend, etc. We stay home a lot, because as boring as it can be, it is better than being sick. Also, we don’t usually do bathes every night (unless me daughter is super dirty, etc…like summer!) but during cold and flu season, if we have been playing with others, we will definitely do a bath that night.

Never set your purse on a table or counter (one of the germiest things is the bottom of your purse … think about where all you sit it down).

Always wipe off the handle bar of your grocery cart. And the seat area if your baby sits there. We usually have a cart cover for her to sit in.

    Drink kefir every day.

We don’t do anything really special–the main thing for us is getting enough rest. DH especially tends to push himself too hard, and the stress and lack of sleep seem to weaken his immune system.

We wash our hands alot. We use elderberry(the active ingredient in tamiflu) and we get our flu shots. The flu has already been reported in several states, and H1N1 is still very active in India and Australia. It should be making a comeback here soon.

I boost my immune system by drinking elderberry juice; when I do catch a cold, I take Sambucol. It’s great stuff, lessons both symptoms and duration of illness.

  • Jenn said:

I know some people may think this is gross but I do not let my children wash their hands after they use the bathroom in public places ( like Wal-mart). They have done studies on the germs on those faucets and have found fecal matter and other disgusting stuff. If you must wash always use a papertowel to turn the faucet off. As soon as we get out of there I start pulling out my hand sanitizer.

I try to get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of water to help flush anything “bad” out of my system. At work we have hand sanitizer at the doorways, so I use that frequently. I get the flu shot (and last year the H1N1 shot early). However, none of that protected me from getting a wicked walking pneumonia for 3 months in February of ’09. And eventually losing 2/3 of my right lung to it.

I actually think I picked it up at the gym, as it was a water-borne “flavor” of pneumonia, and I was working out at the time, recovering from hip surgery the year prior. And I’m only 35 years old!

So the moral of the story, folks, is that you can do as much as you want to, but if you’re going to get sick, it’s going to happen. Only thanks to my good health prior, and the grace of God, am I not on Oxygen now, according to my Pulmonologist.
