Apple Fruit Roll Up (Fruit Leather)

>3 November 2010 2,608 views

A fun new snack I tried making last week out of the abundance of apples we had was Apple Fruit Roll Ups, (or Fruit Leathers). I was really surprised at how easy they were to make, and they came out so good!

You don’t have to have a food dehydrator to make these, if you wanna see how it’s done in the oven, Heavenly Homemakers shares how to do it.

And you don’t even have to make these roll ups completely from scratch. If you already have a jar of applesauce laying around, that is all you need! I had just finished making some homemade applesauce and had a little leftover, so I thought I’d try something new and make it into this fun treat instead.

I have two fruit roll sheets for my dehydrator, so that made it a little easier. I lightly greased them with shortening, and poured the applesauce into each sheet. Using a spoon, I just spread it around evenly, about 1/4″ thick.

The temperature and time probably depends on your machine, but mine recommends drying at 130*F – 140*F, for about 4-8 hours. It is done when it feels leather like but still a tad bit sticky, and peels up easily. Don’t over cook it though. I left mine in a bit too long, and it was almost brittle.

When it was finished, I peeled up each sheet and cut them into pieces to be rolled up. Some people recommend wrapping them in plastic wrap, but we don’t usually have any, so I just rolled them up and put them in a mason jar to keep them fresh.

The kids and I have really enjoyed snacking on these delicious and healthy treats! No sugar added. No preservatives. Nothing but pure apple puree. And they really are good and sweet.

It would be really cool to learn how to make these in the sun. Hmmmmm… another project for the future! Can’t wait to get my hands on more fruit so that I can experiment with other flavors!!

You ever tried making these? Have a favorite fruit leather recipe you can share? I’d love to know how you do it.

I’ve done apricot and strawberry (and maybe something else? cherry maybe?) roll-ups… used a little corn syrup in them for a tiny bit of sweetener and to help make the strawberries a smidge thicker. Kids loved ‘em.
But plain dried, sliced dehydrated apples or apples sprinkled with cinnamon sugar (besides applesauce) are how my own house likes preserved apples. :D
