Easy Bake Ovens- What A Scam! Try These Homemade Recipes Instead of Those Expensive Refill Packs.

>9 November 2010 2,652 views

When my daughter received an Easy Bake oven for her birthday this year, she was thrilled at the idea of being able to cook up her own little treats. But after she used the two packs of cake and cookie mix which came with the toy, it wasn’t much good anymore. She needed more mixes!

We took a trip to Toys R Us to spend a gift card she had, but when we checked out the prices on the Easy Bake Oven refill mixes, I was shocked!! $7 for what will yield two cookies the sizes of silver dollars… no joke… SEVEN DOLLARS! You’ve got to be out of your mind, Hasbro!

No way. I figured there must be recipes online that somebody has figured out would work with an Easy Bake Oven. And I was right.

If a little girl in your life has an Easy Bake Oven that has been sitting on the top shelf in her closet because she ran out of baking mixes long ago, well dust that bad boy off and try some of these fun, homemade baking mixes instead:

Kitchen Crafts & More: Includes cakes, frosting, brownies, pizza, tea cakes, and biscuits!

Easy-Bake Oven Recipes: Everything from breads, desserts and candies, to hearty main dishes.

I had an Easy Bake Oven as a child, and my daughter had one also. We did the same thing you did, searched for recipes. There are many out there. I have wonderful memories of baking in my Easy Bake Oven, and my daughter does, too. I am sure your daughter will have wonderful memories, also, thanks to mom doing a little research. Thanks for sharing. I absolutely love your web site.

Thanks for the links. My daughter got one for Christmas last year and hasn’t used it very much. I may have to find a recipe for her to make as a snack today.

While you are talking about kids cooking toys, don’t waste your money on the Girl Gourmet cupcake maker. At least the Easy Bake Oven works. The cupcake maker is a piece of junk. My middle daughter was so disappointed!

If you are really interested, there was a cookbook put out a few years ago called “The Easy-Bake Oven Gourmet”. They asked some famous chefs who say they got their start with an EBO to make up some gourmet recipes. There is also some history and each chef gives their own EBO story. It’s a fun read and I’m sure you can find it at your library.

My daughter has wanted an Easy Bake for a long time and I knew it was lots of money to keep using it. So I borrowed my neice Mary’s for her to try and boy was she ticked off when she got 2 little cookies. In my opinion a huge waste of money, I think my daughter would rather just bake with me for real and have lots of cookies.

I had always wanted an easy bake oven. It was on my Christmas list until I was 16! My mom finally asked me why on earth I still had it on the list since I was already using the “real” oven by then..lol. I got one for my own daughter and was so disappointed…my daughter even mentioned that we should just make them in the oven. She grew too impatient waiting for her two little cookies to finish baking.

My daughter has wanted one for several years. She’s 8 right now. Two weeks ago she told me she really wanted one for Christmas. I asked her if she wouldn’t prefer using the real kitchen. She has already been cooking and baking with me for a couple years. It just won’t do. LOL Thanks Kendra for investigating this. I would have never thought to look online for recipes. The cost of mixes was the major reason of my not purchasing one sooner. I’ll check them out. It would be so neat to make up some pre-made mixed in jars and print out some cute labels to put on them for another Christmas gift. This Christmas is all about homemade due to the economy!

Heather, that’s exactly what I was thinking about doing for Jada. She would be really excited to find that she had more baking mixes to use :) Thanks for pointing that out!!

Jessica… that’s exactly how my girls were. My oldest was already starting to learn to use the big oven, so it wasn’t much of a thrill and the poor pathetic stuff that came with it didn’t interest my middle daughter either. She acted like she’d just as soon wait until she could use the big oven too. I was NOT impressed.

That’s so funny. Even though my daughter loves to help me cook in the big oven, I think there’s something about having her “own” oven that gives her a sense of independence. I’m sure that’s the appeal to her.

usually, we grab a handful of regular full sized boxed cake mixes when they are on sale really cheap… and just mix one up in the regular mixer and fill the ez bake pans like they were a cupcake tin. makes enough to keep kiddo busy the whole afternoon. lol

I loved my easy bake oven as a kid. I still remember visiting my Gramam the Christmas day I got it to give her my first cake that I baked by myself.

My mom bought us jiffy muffin mixes to use in the oven, and they worked perfectly. We loved it!

I loved my Easy Bake Oven as a kid. And yeah, when the mixes ran out it rotted ona shelf. I have 2 boys, neither wants an Easy Bake, but I’m getting my sister in law (she’s 9!) the Easy Bake oven Microwave kit. I know she likes to bake, and the microwave kit seems like a good alternative to lightbulb cooking hehe
