My Birthday Gifts

I recently celebrated my 31st birthday (yay!), and I thought you might enjoy seeing what my loved ones blessed me with for the occasion!

20,000 Secrets of Tea: The Most Effective Ways to Benefit from Nature’s Healing Herbs (Amazon.com)

From flipping through these pages, it looks like this will be a great reference book. I’m somewhat disapointed that there aren’t specific recipes in the book. It pretty much just lists a ton of herbs and tells what they are good for treating.

The recommendations are pretty vague, for example:

“Bayberry is rich in vitamins and minerals, and has a germicidal agent that fights bacteria and infections. It makes an excellent gargle for sore throats and mouth infections, including thrush, and an effective steam inhalant for sinus congestion.”

Being a beginner in the world of herbal remedies, I would have no idea how to go about making a mouth gargle solution or a steam inhalant using this herb. It would be a lot of guess work.

The book is great to have on hand as I learn to experiment with different herbs, but if I could only have one herbal book this wouldn’t be it. That being said, there’s a ton of great info in here and I’m excited to have it on my bookshelf.

Be Your Own Doctor  (Bulk Herb Store)

This one is in the mail. I’m super excited to see what information it holds!

Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health: 175 Teas, Tonics, Oils, Salves, Tinctures, and Other Natural Remedies for the Entire Family (Amazon.com)

LOVE this book. Very detailed recipes and helpful insights from the author.

Weston Flat Top Dial Scale, 44 Pound (Amazon.com)

A lot of canning recipes give ingredients by weight, which has always thrown me off ’cause up until now I haven’t had a scale. Now I won’t have to guess how many pounds are in a cup of whatever!

68 oz. Glass Refrigerator Pitchers (Containerstore.com)

Aren’t these GREAT? I got two to store our fresh milk in. They have lids that seal with a twist to keep odors out. The spout keeps spills at bay, and the handle is so nice to have compared to trying to pour from a slippery mason jar. I got the shorter one in the picture. Love.

Erasable Food Storage Labels (Containerstore.com)

I haven’t had a chance to put these to the test yet, but I just loved the idea of re-usable labels. Normally I use blank address labels to date my leftovers in the fridge, but if these do what they say I won’t have to scratch off old labels anymore! Why didn’t I think of this??

Proctor Silex 59735 Immersion Hand Blender (Amazon.com)

For soapmaking. Everyone says it’s a must-have.

Norpro Meat Grinder, Mincer, and Pasta Maker (Amazon.com)

It grinds meat AND makes noodles!! How cool is that?! I’ll have to let you know what I think of this toy after I’ve played a little. I will say that it was surprisingly smaller than I imagined it would be. Anyone out there use one of these before?

On top of all of these wonderful gifts, I was also blessed with a little spending money and an Amazon gift card. I’m debating between buying an old fashioned washboard, or a Wonder Wash. Any thoughts?

I also totally splurged and bought something just for fun. Roses! I’ve been dying to work on the landscape around here, and I figure roses are beautiful to look at, but they are also edible and make a great addition to homemade toiletries. Everything’s gotta have a purpose, right?

I found several Knock Out Roses (red and yellow) at Home Depot marked down to $7 each, so I snagged them up. (By the way, they also had their Blueberry Bushes and Grape Vines marked down to half-price, about $5 each, so we got a few of those as well.)

Isn’t that GREAT? I’m so excited with these new things, and can’t wait to put them all to good use. A big thank you to my family for everything. I’m so grateful to have you all.

I have the glass pitchers and I LOVE them! One thing, when you wash them leave the cap off when you put them in the cupboard. I’m not sure why but the sour milk smell get locked in.
    Happy Birthday! :-)
