Homestead Dryer Rack Review & DVD Giveaway

>27 December 2012

*This Giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Jerri (forgi…)! Thanks to all who entered!

Making the decision to sell our clothes dryer and hang dry 100% of our laundry has been rewarding, yet challenging at times. I still wouldn’t take a dryer if somebody gave us one, but those weeks when the rain seems to know no end are the worst! And now that winter weather seems to have settled in for the duration, I’m finding that I’m having fewer and fewer warm days to use the clothes line.

Indoor clothes racks are an excellent alternative to outdoor line drying. Typically they fold up for storage when not in use, and expand to hold at least several pairs of shirts and pants when needed. The problem, though, is that most of these racks can only accommodate a few pieces of clothing at a time. What about larger families like mine that seem to go through two loads of laundry every day? And how do you go about hanging larger items like blankets and towels indoors?

Insert this gorgeous rack!

This, my friends, is the “Homesteader” by Homestead Drying Racks. It’s the largest, sturdiest dryer rack I’ve seen anywhere, measuring at 6′ tall and 4′ long. With 56 lineal feet of drying space, it’s the perfect indoor/outdoor alternative to a clothesline or electric dryer.

I was given an opportunity to put the Homesteader to the test, and after using it for a couple of weeks, here are my thoughts…

Pros

Size- It’s definitely large enough to hold an extra large load of laundry. I’ve even found that I can fit a large load, plus half of another load depending on what I’ve washed. It can also accommodate a king size sheet or comforter quite well.

Quality- The pieces are made with solid wood, with a very nice, smooth sanded surface. The dowel rods are thick enough not to leave a crease in clothing which has been draped over them to dry. And it left no marks or stains on the clean clothing, as I have found some clothespins and metal dryer racks tend to do over time.

Assembly- Although the rack came completely disassembled, it  included very easy to follow instructions which made putting this bad boy together much less of a chore.

Convenience- The rack folds fairly flat to save space when not in use. It’s lightweight, and very easy to carry.

Cons

Size- Not sure if this is really a “con”, but be aware, if you are pretty short like I am, it might be difficult to reach the center top bars of the largest rack. This doesn’t speak negatively of the quality of the rack, just something to consider.

Assembly- Requires complete assembly and tools, including a hammer, screwdriver and drill. Again, not really a “con” per se, but something to keep in mind when ordering. The instructions were easy enough to understand that I was able to put the entire rack together by myself.

All in all, I am VERY pleased with this rack. To save space, I’ll be storing it underneath our bed when not in use. But currently I am loading it up on an almost daily basis.

If you are looking for a dryer rack to hang your laundry on inside or out, Homestead Drying Racks has several to choose from! If the “Homesteader” rack I’ve told you about seems to be more dryer than you need, you might also consider the “Pioneer”, a 5′ x 3′ rack, or the “Peddler”, a smaller size for cozy spaces, measuring at 38″ x 30″.

BONUS GIVEAWAY

As a special bonus, Mark and Erin from the Homestead Store are offering one of my lucky readers a set of Homesteading for Beginners DVDs, a $99.95 value!

A while back I pinned the Homestead Drying rack webpage (probably on a recommendation from you!) b/c I really wanted someone to buy me one as a gift =) I would love to win one!! I have not used the old dryer in our house for many years. I dry everything outside in the summer and inside in the WI winters. (Actually, if it’s warm enough for my fingers, I still line dry some stuff outside in winter too!) But I often find myself running out of space in the winter…anyway – I am so grateful for the information and recommendations I find here. Thanks for being willing to host this give away!

A couple of months ago my heating element quit working in my dryer. I took this as an opportunity to learn alternative drying options besides just my clothesline. I used the line for several weeks until the weather got too cold or rain was longlasting. My husband was finally able to acquire a new heating element for my 20+ year old dryer but I explained that I wanted to cut electric costs so I will use my cheap drying racks or hang a line in the garage. He has been so supportive that he bought me an inexpensive drying rack for Christmas. One of my best gifts! However, I have long dreamed of owning one of the Homestead drying racks. I greatly appreciate the offer to win one of these. With a family of 4 adults and operating a small farm I do large or extra large loads daily. Love your blog too.

I do have my plans started for my garden next year and I have berries in the freezer that will be coming out and turned into jam this next month. I enjoy your blog and how you make a lot of this seem so easy. I see each step as a new adventure. Thanks for sharing and I would love to win this set of DVDs.

  • Terri Sue said:

I don’t use my dryer. My husband strung clotheslines between trees in our backyard. I have 7 lines. I would love one of these dryers for times like today. I did 2 loads of darks yesterday and hung them up. It was a bit humid but the forecast was fine. They weren’t dry when I was ready to go to bed so they stayed on the line. This morning when I took our dog out this morning I realized it had rained overnight. Now I have a line full of wet, wet laundry. I’m going to have to tell my husband we need one of these dryers for days like today. Hanging clothes outside is difficult in the winter and spring. It might rain for a week. With this dryer I could just bring it indoors. The Homesteading DVD’s look fantasic. Thank you for the chance.

  • Lisa said:

Wow, I would love to try out this drying rack. I hang my laundry out on the line when I can, but living in New England, it’s just too wet or cold about 5 months of the year. I’ve got a flimsy old folding rack that I sometimes set up beside our woodstove, but it just won’t hold enough laundry for my family of four.

I don’t own a dryer… but I would probably admit to wishing for one every now and then. Breastfeeding is a little rough on clothes and sometimes I want a dryer to shrink it back together.

I have about 100 feet of clothesline outside, and then I have the Ikea drying rack for indoor drying. I can put 2 or 3 loads of clothes outside at a time, but only one on the inside rack and it’ll take about 24 hours to dry.

On the other hand, I’m grateful to have a washer! I didn’t have any for the first 7 years of my marriage.
