*This Giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Jerri (forgi…)! Thanks to all who entered!

Making the decision to sell our clothes dryer and hang dry 100% of our laundry has been rewarding, yet challenging at times. I still wouldn’t take a dryer if somebody gave us one, but those weeks when the rain seems to know no end are the worst! And now that winter weather seems to have settled in for the duration, I’m finding that I’m having fewer and fewer warm days to use the clothes line.

Indoor clothes racks are an excellent alternative to outdoor line drying. Typically they fold up for storage when not in use, and expand to hold at least several pairs of shirts and pants when needed. The problem, though, is that most of these racks can only accommodate a few pieces of clothing at a time. What about larger families like mine that seem to go through two loads of laundry every day? And how do you go about hanging larger items like blankets and towels indoors?

Insert this gorgeous rack!

This, my friends, is the “Homesteader” by Homestead Drying Racks. It’s the largest, sturdiest dryer rack I’ve seen anywhere, measuring at 6′ tall and 4′ long. With 56 lineal feet of drying space, it’s the perfect indoor/outdoor alternative to a clothesline or electric dryer.

I was given an opportunity to put the Homesteader to the test, and after using it for a couple of weeks, here are my thoughts…

Pros

Size- It’s definitely large enough to hold an extra large load of laundry. I’ve even found that I can fit a large load, plus half of another load depending on what I’ve washed. It can also accommodate a king size sheet or comforter quite well.

Quality- The pieces are made with solid wood, with a very nice, smooth sanded surface. The dowel rods are thick enough not to leave a crease in clothing which has been draped over them to dry. And it left no marks or stains on the clean clothing, as I have found some clothespins and metal dryer racks tend to do over time.

Assembly- Although the rack came completely disassembled, it  included very easy to follow instructions which made putting this bad boy together much less of a chore.

Convenience- The rack folds fairly flat to save space when not in use. It’s lightweight, and very easy to carry.

Cons

Size- Not sure if this is really a “con”, but be aware, if you are pretty short like I am, it might be difficult to reach the center top bars of the largest rack. This doesn’t speak negatively of the quality of the rack, just something to consider.

Assembly- Requires complete assembly and tools, including a hammer, screwdriver and drill. Again, not really a “con” per se, but something to keep in mind when ordering. The instructions were easy enough to understand that I was able to put the entire rack together by myself.

All in all, I am VERY pleased with this rack. To save space, I’ll be storing it underneath our bed when not in use. But currently I am loading it up on an almost daily basis.

If you are looking for a dryer rack to hang your laundry on inside or out, Homestead Drying Racks has several to choose from! If the “Homesteader” rack I’ve told you about seems to be more dryer than you need, you might also consider the “Pioneer”, a 5′ x 3′ rack, or the “Peddler”, a smaller size for cozy spaces, measuring at 38″ x 30″.
