Homemade Conditioners

Okay, here are some homemade conditioner recipes that I have rounded up to go with last week’s shampoo recipes. As with those,  I have not tried any of these yet (I think I’ll wait until I run out of the store bought stuff first), so I don’t know personally how well they work. As soon as I try them I will add my comments.

Vinegar Rinse:

  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1/4 c. vinegar (white or apple cider)
  • 1 peppermint tea bag or 5 drops essential oil (optional)

Mix the water and vinegar in a jar, then add the tea bag or essential oil. After shampooing, just pour this rinse into your hair and wash thoroughly.

No need to store this in the refrigerator.

Egg Conditioner:

  • 1 tsp. baby oil OR 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup water

Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl and beat until frothy. After shampooing, massage the mixture into hair. Rinse thoroughly.
Store any leftover conditioner in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Deep Conditioner:

  • Honey
  • Jojoba oil.

Combine equal parts honey and jojoba oil. After shampooing massage into hair. Let sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Hot Oil Treatment:

  • 1/8 c. olive oil
  • 1 vit. E capsule

Heat olive oil until warm. Puncture vitamin E capsule and mix liquid with olive oil. Apply to hair, really working into the ends. Wrap hair with saran wrap and towel. Leave in for 20 minutes, then only wash (no condition) hair as usual.

Thanks Kat, for this recipe!

Anyone have a favorite they’d like to share??

  1. What about Mayo? It also treats headlice. You can use it plain or mix a few drops of tea tree oil in a jar of mayo and put in hair, wrap in plasic wrap, and leave for 30 minutes. This is great for kids who are too sensitive to use chemical lice treatments on. Also, as far as conditioners, rinsing hair with beer adds shine and volume.

  2. Olive oil is also great to just put on hair without being in the shower. I sometimes “oil” my ends over night, then when I wash my hair in the morning it’s much more conditioned. For a really great conditioning treatment, I like to mix 2 parts conditioner with 1 part honey, 1 part clear aloe vera gel (found this on a forum) Apply, comb through and leave on for a good bit. It works great! (but still uses store bought conditioner.) Thanks for sharing. =o)
